Our heritage
Macmillan Publishers group of companies has a rich history in the book industry, which spans almost 200 years and began in 1843 with brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan opening their first bookshop at 57 Aldersgate Street, London. At that time, Daniel Macmillan wrote to a friend and advisor to say: “I thought it worthwhile to plant a seed”. The business continued to grow over the decades, publishing such notable authors as Charles Kingsley, Christina Rossetti, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling.
Today Macmillan publishes and distributes worldwide a broad range of quality works, including award-winning fiction and non-fiction, plus inspired and much-loved children’s books.
Macmillan Publishers is a global trade publishing company, owned by Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, with imprints in the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Australia and around the world.
